Is Windsor castle worth it?

I have been to London twice and am returning for a week in November. I have not been to Windsor Castle yet, even though I have heard about it as a decent day trip outside of the city.
Is it fun and interesting with historical stories from the tour guides, i.e. like the Tower of London, or is it just a grand palace just to oooh and ahhhh at...?

Are pictures allowed to be taken inside?

Are there shops around in Windsor, like other little places to go to instead of just going for the castle? I know there is a park nearby that would be great for a picnic lunch.

I know I can google for reviews, but first wanted the opinion of my fellow Rick Steve-ites..

Tami, yes Windsor Castle is worth it. There are plenty of shops nearby and some good quick restaurants a short walk off the tourist line. When at the castle, be sure to see the state rooms while listening to the audio guide. You can see the doll house too, but the line is longer, and unless you are interested in that genre of childhood, you can get in quicker just to bypass it. The grounds are special and the Chapel is impressive. The park you speak of is just pass the Castle and once inside the entrance, a few more feet gives you the best photo shoot of Windsor Castle. Good thing you're going in November, you'll miss getting what I got, an MBE (Menacing Bee Experience).

Queen Mary's Doll house at Windsor is definitely worth any wait. It shouldn't as bad in October but you do get lardge school groups going through.
It was designed by Edward Lutygens, a famous architect of the period and is abolutely amazing in its details. There is even a book on it. I am sure if you google it, you will find lots of information.

The most amazing part of the State rooms is their re-construction since the diastrous fire. They should have photos on display showing what the rooms were like after the fire. ( I haven't been there in a few years).

They have an amazing shop on the grounds as well.
In town there are numerous shops as well as a shopping center in the old Railroad station.

If you go downhill and cross the bridge over the Thames, you will find yourself at Eton and you can have a little peek at this famous school.

It's great, so is the entire town. But they really built it all way too close to the airport. It's right in the landing path of Heathrow ;-)

Yea Andreas, Why didnt they think about that hundreds of years ago? :)

I would love to see the dollhouse. I have heard about that and wasnt aware that Windsor castle is where it is at! Thanks for the info! I am definately going to go!

Andreas I do believe either you are jesting or you meant they should not have built Heathrow so close to Windsor considering that Windsor was there first by many, many years!!!!

You can also visit Eton which is a short walk from WP. King Georges' Chapel is within the castle grounds also. I don't think photos are allowed but it has been six years or so since I visited WP. There were lots of little shops in the town.

Windsor is absolutely worth a visit. I believe the park of which you speak is Great Windsor Park. Just up the road from the Castle entrance is the delightful Crooked House of Windsor. Has anyone ever had a Magnum bar I think they're called. Vanilla ice cream dipped in white chocolate.
