The wife and I will be leaving London from Heathrow at 5PM. We had planned to leave our hotel about 10AM, take a cab to Paddington Station and leave our bags there, then take the tube to Buckingham Palace to see the changing of the guard, then lunch, and finally back to Paddington to take the Heathrow Connect to the airport. But in order for all this to work, I have to make sure that we have a place to leave our bags. I know that British Rail stations used to have a baggage check room or coin-operated lockers, but with the security problems over the past several years, many places that used to offer bag check service no longer do so.
Anyone here have any information on this?
Well, these computers are wonderful things. I just Googled "Paddington Station" and found that they have a Left Luggage room operated by an outfit called "Excess Baggage Company". (I know, I know. I should have tried that BEFORE I posted my question.) Their rates are 8 pounds per bag for the 1st 24 hours, and 4 pounds per day thereafter. I think I'll see if we can leave the bags at our hotel.
We have had a lot of good experiences leaving our bags at our hotel when we check out and pick them up later in the day. I dont remember any charge- just a nice tip
All of the train stations in central London have a luggage hold counter.
Eight pounds per bag is more than I'd pay for storing bags for a few hours. I've never been in a hotel that won't hold bags after you check out for retrieval later in the day. Leave your bags at your hotel, and come back later to get them and grab that cab to Paddington. If your flight is at 5pm, you really do need to be there no later than 3pm.
Just as well that you're not trying to get to Buck House from Paddington by tube. Its not easy: Bakerloo, Hammersmith and City, or Circle Line to Baker Street, change to Jubilee Line to Green Park and walk. The (buses) numbers 36 and 436 link both with no sweat, and a slight walk on the Buck House end.
