My family of 4 adults will be traveling to London in October. I was reading about the London Pass with transportation covering all tube and bus fares plus many attractions. It's quite expensive - about $400.00 for all four of us. We will have 3 full days of sightseeing and I think our hotel is in the Paddington Station area, which is a bit from central London, isn't it? Any tips?
The London pass probably isn't worth it. It really depends where you want to go but you need to hit 2 or 3 pay sites every day to make your money back. It does work for some (very busy) itineraries though.
Things to bear in mind:
A lot of museums are free, including the "biggies" like the British Museum and the British Library.
The transport option gets you a zone 1-6 travel card, zone 6 is right out into the burbs. 99% of the main tourist sites are in zones 1-2.
The best advice I can give is to decide where you want to go, look up the prices on the internet and see if they come to less than $400.

I agree the travel element of the pass is a waste of money for almost all visitors.
Cindy, I bought this several years ago on my 1st trip to London, and although we were very busy, I didn't come out ahead, or even. Only lost a few pounds tho, so it wasn't a big deal, but with 4 adults, and trying to coordinate among all of you, I would guess it wouldn't be worth it. But like the other post, look at what you want to do, prices, time and see for sure.
Thanks to everyone who replied. I have made a list of attractions we want to see and am pricing them individually.
I added up what I would want to do and it would be cheaper for me to just pay rather than use the pass. Unless you hit a bunch of locations each day, it may not be worth it in the end. When you think OK I will pay 40 GBP to see all 6 of these attractions in one day, and if you only end up going to 3, totaling 24 GBP, its not worth it!!
I didn't buy the pass either (even though I did buy the museum pass in Paris). Many of the main museums in London are free, and the only place you need to bypass a line is the Tower of London, and you can pre-buy the ticket for that elsewhere and walk right to the gate.
Is the London Pass worth it to be able to skip the lines (especially in the busy summer months), as you often can with the Museum Pass in Paris>
I wouldn't do it. If you plan on using the tube, you can get a 3 day travelcard for 18.50 GBP (about $35) that covers zone 1-2. Or you can buy a daily off-peak travel card for 5.5 GBP which only means you have to wait until after 9:30am to get on the tube. As all the attractions open after 10am, that shouldn't be an issue. If you are staying in Paddington, there is a lot near enough there that you could probably cut out one of travel card if you wanted. Almost all of London's attractions are free and in my experience lines are very rarely an issue for attractions unless they are ticketed ones - i.e. London Eye and Tower of London or Buckingham Palace. If you are only there for 3 days, you probably aren't going to do more than 2 things per day and will probably walk a lot more than you will take the tube. Paddington is close enough to Central London that you can walk to some places, but the is probably far enough where you'd want to take the tube if you are going too far southwest or even to the Thames.
It's not worth it because lines are short or non-existent. I went in July a few years ago and the only place with lines was the Tower of London, so buy the ticket elsewhere and you can skip that line.
