Is the London Pass with travel a good option?

Does anyone know about the London Pass? It now has an option to get the travel card with it for additional monies. I am trying to decide between Oyster card - pay as you go Or the London Pass with the travel card. Will be in London for the first time for 7 days.

Also, the travel card will allow us to travel on the tube from Heathrow? What is the best way to get from Heathrow mid day to the Waterloo Station?

This has been a huge topic, so you may want to use the "search" box above for the answers.

The London Pass IMHO is not worth it with travel. In fact the pass is hard to break even, unless you plan on seeing the attractions at neck breaking pace.

You really save money if you visit 3 or 4 attractions per day, and the long "queues" they talk about is very rare.

There is a paper version of the Travel card (again use search to find topic discussions) which provides discounts to some of the attractions.

The Oyster card tops off after "X" number of use per day. The London Pass is prepaid per day, even if you use it once.

The Travelcard is outside the zone for Heathrow, but at the airport, there is an information kiosk which can help you decide the best way to get you to London.

Did you want the Waterloo station for the Eurostar?? If so, its not at Waterloo, but at Kings Cross/ Pancreas.

Note for Everyone: Please...If you actually want to find answers, don't use the search box above to find answers, the built in search box is broken, won't find 10% of what you're looking for.

There are 2-for-1 offers associated with paper travlecards purchased at National Rail stations and bearing the National Rail logo. These are NOT sold at Tube stations. See www.daysoutguide.co.uk for a list of offers and to print vouchers for the ones in which you are interested.

IMO, the London Pass is a poor deal for attractions only and an even worse deal with the transport option included.

If you are going to take any trips beyond zone 2 in addition to traveling from Heathrow to London, you could buy Oyster cards at Heathrow and load some pay-as-you-go pounds on them. Buy one-day, zone 1-2 paper National Rail travelcards (not sold at Heathrow) for each day you plan to use any 2-for-1 offers. Don't use your Oyster cards on those days. On all other days let the Oyster computer do its work in giving you the best fare. You will never pay more than 50 pence less than the cost of a one-day travelcard for the zones in which you travel that day, no matter how many rides you take.

If you don't care about the 2-for-1 offers, buy Oyster cards and load 7-day, zone 1-2 travelcards on them plus some pay-as-you go pounds to get you to London on the Tube and for any other rides you take beyond zone 2.

Chris - We just got back from a week each in London and Paris, and I had to make this same decision myself. I went with Oyster cards for each member of my family (6). In the end, for us, the Oyster card was not as good of a deal because we tend to use the tube A LOT. Six or eight trips a day are not unusual for us it turned out, so I ended up spending more on the Oyster than a 7 day pass would have required. At 7 days the Pass or the Oyster are a tossup as Rick suggests in his book, and he is right. One caveat I learned was that reloading the Oyster card is easy with a credit card, but for "security" purposes you can only swipe the same card twice in a day at the automated reloading machines. If you have a larger family as I did, this got annoying and we found ourselves loading a couple of pounds at a time with coins in the last few days. Short answer - if you think you will use the tube a lot - 4+ times a day over a seven day stay - I would get the Pass. You will want to go here and there freely and not mess around. Have a great time.

Tim you could have gotten 7 day travel cards on the oyster cards. They are 27 GBP each for zones 1-2 and are unlimited usage. I usually ride the tube at least 6-8 times a day on a heavy touristy day. You can even use them on regular city buses.
The only time you have to add more money is if you only get them for the zone 1-2 and yyou need to get to and from Heathrow, then you have to add like 3 or 4 GBP to cover both ways.
