Is Phoenix Park in Dublin a good idea or no?

Hello,
Notice that Rick doesn't say anything about this large park and wondered if anyone has gone and could comment? I love parks/nature and want to know if I should try and fit in a visit? Is it hard to get to, nice, any wildlife?

I am in Dublin for 4 days.

Thank you!

Yes, worth the small efffort to visit, especially if you like urban parks. I didn't see any wildlife other than birds, but there's probably some there.

PS- Rick Steves' guidebooks usually are not big on parks, either city or wilderness, for some reason...

It is a bit out of the way, but if you're heading over to the Guinness storehouse or Kilmainham, it's not that far.

It is rather big, we went there this summer and only saw a small part of it. Our kids wanted to see some pick-up games of soccer, cricket, and hurling, which you can see on Sundays (although there weren't any hurling games we could find). You can also rent bikes there.

As far as wildlife, there's red deer near the president's house, and a zoo near the entrance.

The hop on/hop off buses go through the park. We weren't using these, we had a large family group, but it was easy to get to using the regular bus system.

JP II had mass for over a million people in PHX park early in his papacy. There is a giant cross there to commerate it. Sort of interesting....
