Is Peckham safe?

I'm traveling with friends to London in September. I've secured a very nice apartment for our stay, but in doing research, I've found the safety of the area to be up for debate. By postcode, it's considered Nunhead but it's also close to Peckham. I know this area has been undergoing renovation and is more appealing than it once was, but I need some honest feedback about whether it would be safe for a group of women. The bus stop is right outside our door, the nearest tube stop is Elephant & Castle. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

I think you may find that area more ethnically diverse and for some people this can shake their sense of security.

Unless you plan on finding a new place to stay, my advice would be the same which is to stay alert in your new surroundings. Only you and your friends will be able to judge if you will feel safe in that neighborhood.

It's not the best area of London, not by any standards. I hate being negative about London but on this occasion it's only fair to say this is not a good area.

If you can get out of the deal and get an apartment for the same rate in a better area ( that's generally north of the river ) please do so. If not use all sensible precautions.

Please don't let posters deter you.

Buses are really good in this area and you will also be close to the trains stations in New Cross.

I think you will be fine.

It is a working class neighborhood. If you have never been to London, you will see a different side of the white middle class stereotype most people have of it.

Check upmystreet.com for more specifics about the local area.
