Is it worth it to stop in York for 6 hours?

At the end of my trip, I head from Edinburgh to London. I've been contemplating a stop in York, however, it would only be for 6-8 hours at most. Is it worth it to stop for a few hours? I'm getting to Edinburgh via Wales and Carlisle, so the route home will be different regardless.

Financially, there isn't a big difference in my options:

31 pounds to fly
37 pounds direct train
32-42 pounds to stop in York

Any opinions?

I'd say stop....you can get a general feeling for the town in that time period and see a few of the sights. Try to get there in time for one of the guided walks.

I would do it. Six hours is enough time to see York Minster, which is really spectacular, and walk around the town, which is really enjoyable. It may not be an in depth visit, but you will get a good feel for the place.

York is well worth the stop. Be sure to wander around the market and the Shambles. A short walk along part of the old wall would be nice also. York is a marvelous city!

You might stop by at the Guy Fawkes Inn for a beer. This is where Guy Fawkes reportedly hashed out his plan with others to blow up Parliament in 1605. Lots of history there. He didn't make it and was drawn and quartered. The incident is the basis for Firecracker day in Great Britain (Nov 5).

Hi, York native again.
I'd second having a beer at the Guy Fawkes, it is a lovely very atmospheric place (and the beers good too!).
I have to correct the statement that he plotted the Gunpowder Plot there, or that he was born there - which is another story trotted out for the tourists.
Fact is, Guido Fawkes was a York Native, but no one really knows where he was born, it was definately in the area of the Guy Fawkes Inn, but probably not on the doorstep as it were!
What is known is that he was christened in St Michael le Belfry, which is the small church opposite the Inn, and then he went to St Peters School on Bootham - who to this day do not have a "guy" on their bonfire on Nov 5th (they don't burn old boys!)
Nov 5th is Bonfire Night - not Firecracker Day, people burn bonfires in their back gardens, let off fireworks and have bonfire parties of jacket potatoes, sausages, soup and bonfire toffee.

Gunpowder, treason and plot"

Yes! York is user friendly. Our family fell in love with York in just a few hours (we did stay overnight, too). I think York was my husbands's favorite stop during our 2 week trip to UK. We joined a memorable evening walking tour--perhaps there's a good one in the day.

I trained from Edinburgh to London and stopped in York. All I did was visit the National Railway Museum, www.nrm.org.uk, because my break was just a couple of hours. With 6 or more I would definitely have walked around a bit more and hopefully visited the Minster. If you like trains, definitely check out the Museum! Cheers.

Yes, York is a lovely city and if you have just a few hours, walk along the city walls. I think there are guided walks but you can also choose to go your own free way. It is definitely worth it!

I'd prefer more time in York but you can at least see the York Minster and wander the shambles (or pick something else near the center) so yes you should go.

Wow, thanks everyone!

I'd been on the fence, but the strong opinion here makes things clear. I'll start the trip early enough from Edinburgh to leave plenty of time to stop in York. I'm not in a racing hurry to get back to London, as I've got the next day blocked off for one last day to say goodbye to London before getting on a plane the day after that.

Thank you all!
