I love walled cities and with the history that Derry has, it seems like a neat place to spend some time...Can I make a day of it or is it more of a half day place? If so are there attractions in the area that would make a day visit?
My wife and I enjoyed it a lot more than Belfast. We got there in the evening after a long drive from Galway. We spent about 3/4 of the next day in Derry before heading onto Portrush later in the afternoon. The murals were emotional, the city museum was good and walking the walls was fun. It worked out well, we saw everything we wanted to but didn't feel rushed.
I too preferred Derry to Belfast. There are tours of Derry and I would highly recommend one of the 60-90 minute walking tours to get a full understanding of "The Troubles".
I'm a bit biased but it is my favorite town/city in the whole of Ireland. A walk around the walls, a walk through the Bogside a drive through the Creggan and the Waterside/Top of the Hill is a nice way to spend a day. The sites are marked with monuments but are in the middle of neighborhoods so it would be helpful to do a bit of reading before going. The Bogside Artists offer a walking tour and I think the Free Derry Museum still has a walking tour at 1pm. No matter what side of politics your on, Derry has an long history of being a central flashpoint in Irish history. Oh...and there's some great amount of bars, too :)
Nicki, I think Derry is well worth a visit if you have time. I agree with the other reply that mentioned taking one of the local Walking Tours. The tour that I took was VERY moving, and provided a interesting view of "The Troubles". Happy travels!
I agree with everyone else. I liked Derry much better than Belfast. You can easily spend a day there, as there is so much history. A walking tour would be a good option (I went with a family I met so I didn't take a tour). I also liked the Museum of Free Derry, even though it was very emotional. So, if you have the time to spend a day - do! If not ,you can still see the important parts in a half day.
