Is 20 days enough

I am in the very very early stages of planning a 2012 trip to Ireland. Will 20 days be enough to see what really needs to be seen? We are not big city type people, but we loved Rome Florence, and Paris(a contradiction I know). Is Dublin worth a few days, considering the time we have? What about other towns and cities of interest? We are Italy nuts, and love the smaller hilltowns in tuscany. Can we find the same small town culture on our own , and in a car? Any help is greatly appreciated! We look forward to reading your advice. Thanks, Jeff

Do you have RS Britain & Ireland Guide book yet? If so, good. If not, you should get it and read it as it has lots of helpful information for you that we found in it when planning our trip to Ireland.

Absolutely enough time, there are plenty of wonderful little towns you will really enjoy. Car is the only way to go I think. You will love the &B's also. Dublin is okay for two days, i would skip the Guiness Brewery. Don't miss Kilmainhaim Gaol, I thought it was the best of Dublin. I loved Dingle better than Ring of Kerry but that is personal opinion. Also enjoyed Doolin, really small town if you could even call it a town. Enjoy.

Jeff, Absolutely enuf time. Dublin is certainly worth a couple of days at least. Go to the GPO and, for those of us who think Guinness is a food group, don't miss the brewery. Add to that Trinity College, Kilmainham Gaol and Grafton Street, theres 2 days gone. Not to mention New Grange and Bru na boinne. Small town culture can be found in lots of places, Kinsale and Kenmare for a couple. And don't forget the Aran Islands.

Dublin is absolutely worth spending a few days. Even if you aren't big city types, Dublin is a much easier city to grasp than Rome and Paris where 2-3 days would not even begin to scratch the surface. Dublin is far more compact, so it's much more of a walking city, especially if you stay central, most of what you will want to see as a tourist is right there. I love Guiness, but don't love the brewery as you see absolutely nothing of the brewing process. The only real things of interest are the displays on advertising throughout the years, and the final stop in the Gravity Bar where you have a nice panoramic view of the city while you enjoy your 1 "free" pint. So many people here will talk up the Ring of Kerry, Beara Penninsula or Dingle areas, but there are some equally amazing drives around Donegal in the North. And if you can squeeze in some time and cross the border into Northern Ireland, the Antrim coast is amazing (Giant's Causeway), and you can delve into some of the history of the Troubles with a visit to either Derry or Belfast (again, both are manageable cities that are walkable and easy to get a sense of the highlights with a 2-3 day visit). Whatever you decide, look into flying "open jaw" into one city and out another so you don't have to needlessly backtrack or complete a circle back to your starting point.

We are planning a return trip to Ireland in 2012 and I have been tweaking our plan since last year. i will be happy to share my research with you if you wish. Ireland (32,600 square miles) is smaller than Kentucky (40,400 square miles). I think you will be able to see most of the highlights in 20 days, even if the roads are slower ;)
