Irish ruined abbeys

I am looking over a few options, and would like some opinions! We will be near three different abbeys/monasteries, and I was wondering which one(s) we should stop by. 1. Glendalough Abbey. We are going to be doing the Military Road drive, going right by this abbey. 2. Jerpoint Abbey. We will be at Kilkenny, just up the road from here. 3. Clonmacnoise. This one would be out of our way. Is it worth the drive, especially if we have done at least one of the others? For some context, even though I am not religious, the most incredible thing for me on my trip to England last year was Rievaulx Abbey. The setting, the ruins, all just blew me away.

Make Number 3 Number 1 and work from there.

Can only speak from experience. Throughly enjoyed both 1 & 2. Glendalough is gorgeous. Was the only visitor at Jeer Point. It was early November. Remember thinking, "What a marvelous place. Wonder why doesn't RS like it?" Haven't been to #3 Lovely country. Have a great visit.

Try to do all 3. They are all wonderful. If you only do one, Clonmacnoise would be my choice.

There is also the largely ignored Hore Abbey within walking distance near the Rock of Cashel if you're going to be there anyway. Enjoy,

Hello from Wisconsin If you get copies of the really good road maps of Ireland. They have taken Ireland and produce four maps which show individual buildings, abbeys, monuments, round towers... Glendalough...Is spectacular IF you are there when no tour buses are there. Take the walk up along the stream to Kevin's cave or what ever it is. It will take you away from the crowds. Clonmacnoise...Is THE center of Irish learning, and how the Irish saved western civilization. Expect plenty of other people. While near Birr, visit one of the world's largest wood telescopes. Largest in the old days.
Jerpoint??? In all my years...never been there. Then again I stay away from Kilkenny. Try getting to an Earthen or Stone Round Circle by your self. And just sit there. If that doesn't move you I would be surprised. wayne iNWI
