I am planning a trip to Ireland in mid-August of this year. I am looking at some packages from companies like Sceptre travel and bundle in a car and vouchers fro stays at B and Bs? Has anyone else used these? Do they make sense?
Yes, used them several times and had no problems at all. Can't tell you about getting a B&B in August though as we always go off season. Would suggest if you are in one place and know where you will be spending the next night, you might get the owner to call ahead for you to your next stop.
Check your pricing carefully to make sure it's a good deal. See what pricing you can get at some of the better B&Bs (per RS and TripAdvisor) and ask if they accept vouchers. Be sure to price the full CDW into your car price too. For a mid-August trip, I'd prebook all my B&Bs.
I have used Sceptre, as have my parents and sisters, and it was a great deal. But as Ken says, in August I would book everything ahead. Also, verify everything as soon as you arrive in country. Voucher-users can sometimes find their reservations "lost" if someone paying cash comes along. (It happened to us twice.) It takes a long time for owners to be reimbursed for vouchers, which is why some choose not to take them. It wasn't difficult to find alternate housing when that happened (the B&B owners found a new place for us), but it is something to keep in mind.
We went that route a few years ago, and all went well. However for the sake of a few, well a lot more than a few, hours of Internet time you could achieve the same result for less money. We visited in mid July and prebooked only our first and last night. We always found a bed, but would start looking about 4 pm. This year I've prebooked everything, much less stressful.
The package that we had included the airfare, rental car, and six nights in B&Bs for a really incredible price. I'm not sure that you could achieve the same result for the same price on your own. I know we couldn't when we priced it out.
