Irelands Beer

I know pubs in Ireland are famous for that "pint of Guiness" but unfortunatly I am gluten/wheat intolerant. I don't want to offend the Irish...but does anyone know if they have any kind of wheat free beer there??

I don't know for sure but it could be a little difficult to find. You might try www.porterhousebrewco.com as they are a brew pub and may have something you could drink. There is always Bullmer's Cider which is very good and available everywhere.

There are lots of beers other than Guinness served in Ireland. Harp, Murphys etc. You will certainly not offend any Irish folks if you don't order Guinness or any beer for that matter. I suggest doing an internet search on Irish beers and then go to each website and see if the ingredients are listed. Hope you have a great time.

Shows what I know. I didn't know Guiness had wheat in it.

All the beers have hops and I expect most have barley. Does that bother you? I only think of some Bavarian beers as being wheat beers.

The cider may be a good choice if apples are not a problem.

For everyone's info, glutens are found in wheat, rye, barley and oats.

Actually, it doesn't. The malt is all barley, which of course, is right out for Kim.

As someone who has brewing experience for the past twenty-five years I can tell you all beer has some gluten. All grains except corn and rice have gluten. Wheat is the richest source though. Many big rich and heady beers use wheat and other forms of raw grains in production. If it's just a wheat allergy you have, avoid all beers that say wheat, weissen, weiBen, whit or weiB(I don"t have an s set key) in their names. These styles use a lot of wheat. Most of the lager or very light bodied beers use the smallest amount of barley and usually use rice or corn grits in the brewing process. American light beers would be good examples.Avoid almost all of the Belgian beers. Even the very pale ones. Most beers have little or no wheat.
