Ireland: Would you recommend March or October (9 day driving trip)

My wife and I are planning to rent a car for a nine day trip and are leaning to flying in and out of Shannon. We love historic sites, nature and hope to golf (just once though). We can do the trip in mid March or Mid October, (because summers in Minnesota are too wonderful to travel overseas at that time). Any recommendations?

I agree, the choices are about equal. Some sites are closed during the winter, but March and October are usually both within the "open" period. I've had wonderful weather in early spring, but it can also be misty or rainy. I'd probably vote for March because it's sooner. :)

You're going to run into some rain with either, but I think October is a little warmer, and you should have some better choices for accomodations. Driving is the way to go. Keep in mind that it takes almost 2X as long to get form point A to B, so plan accordingly. Stop at the little places along the way, it's where you find the real Irish flavor.

If you are flying into Shannon, I can suggest several good B&Bs on the west coast. Very near Shannon is the coastal town of Lahinch, with its famous golf course right on the water. Lahinch itself is a cute little town and there are lots of B&Bs on the bluffs just above town. The Corner Stone pub has excellent food. Around the bay from Lahinch is Liscannor. Moher Lodge in Liscannor (right on the Cliffs of Moher road) is about a five minute drive from the Cliffs. And past the cliffs is the little town of Doolin, famous for live Irish music.
