Ireland with a 13-year-old boy

We'll arrive and leave from Dublin July 25-Aug.2, have 6-7 days in country. He loves sports. Anything not to be missed?

I think Hurling will be in progress at the time you are there. It is like a very rough game of field hockey (or ice hockey on grass). There is another version played in Scotland called Shinty. They are both ardently followed by a very select group of people, but when the national championships are on, it is like the Superbowl on a smaller scale. Everything closes down in the town where it is held. I think the finals are in Spetember, but regular games should be on when you are there.

Hmmm, since he's 13, he's probably more computer-savvy than all of us. Perhaps he could do some research on the internet? It might make him feel more "involved" with the trip if he assists in the planning. :-) Have a great trip!

Hurling is definitely on our to-do list.

DW: great suggestion - why didn't I think of that?

Most weekends there's a cricket match going on at the fields on the grounds of Trinity College. Exciting for a few minutes, though, and then it's just, uh, not.

Also, there is a Bram Stoker museum in Dublin. All the guide books make it sound like a Halloween haunted house kind of thing.

13 yo American boy, cricket and hurling are the suggestions so far. Maybe you could drop us a line and let us know how he finds these.

On Sundays, there's a lot of rec sports going on in Phoenix park. We watched soccer and cricket, got some of the cricket players to try to explain it to us. My niece is an excellent soccer player and joined one of the soccer games. But she's a cute 17 year old girl, it wasn't that hard to get the guys to let her play.

Oh, Maureen - what a nice story about your daughter! Also, what a wonderful memory, playing soccer with some boys in the park in Dublin!

For the OP, I would suggest going to some websites such as:

http://www.discoverireland.com/
http://www.visitdublin.com/

They have listings of events happening by the month,

I envy you arriving in Dublin when you are. I don't leave Tucson until the 31st of August, arriving 1 Sept on an overnite flight and we leave again on 9 Sep.

The time is dragging!
