ireland trip - oughterard vs. clifden

wondering if anyone had any thoughts/advice on staying in oughterard as a base for exploring connemara. found a cute b&b (www.railwaylodge.net) there and looking on the map it seems as if it might be in a good spot to spend the first 2 nights of the trip and explore connemara, then head down to the burren and cliffs of moher on our drive from there to dingle for "part 2" of the trip.

thought of also using clifden as a base... so pros/cons of clifden vs. oughterard would be much appreciated.

cheers!

My personal preference would be for Clifden, but Oughterard might be OK as well. Clifden is on the Atlantic coast, so it's a fair drive beyond Oughterard. It is on the coast drive, though, that takes you to Kylemore Abbey and Connemara National Park. We stayed in a wonderful B&B there, Atlantic View, on the Sky Road. Depending on where you wanted to go in Connemara, you might be happy with either town. Look at www.viamichelin.com to get an idea of how far the places you want to visit in Connemara are from either and base your decision on that.
