My husband and I are planning a trip to the UK in March/April. What is the best way to get from Ireland (Belfast I presume) to Inverness, Scotland? We aren't opposed to car, plane or train. I'm just not sure what would be available at either end. How long would it take to get to Inverness this way?
I would rent a car; it will be easier for you and there are several ferries a day from Belfast to Scotland. We did it several years ago and it was easy.
They recommended that we reserve space on the ferry for our car at least a day in advance. Go to the Tourist Information Office in the town you are in and ask them to reserve for you.
Renting a car in Ireland and returning it in UK will cost a bundle. I would take the bus or fly it. Flybe.com has flight, I just checked March 12, 2009, Depart Belfast and arrive at Inverness- 12:40 Arrive 13:50 £14.49.
That, by far, is the cheapest. Luggage allowance is small though.
We did this very same trip last year. Flew Easy Jet from Belfast to Edinburgh (flight was about 30 minutes!!). Spent a few days in Edinburgh and then caught the train to Inverness.
I think Easyjet gave up that route just before Christmas. Flybe took it over.
Thanks everyone. I've looked at Flybe and I think we're planning on going that way. It will save a ton to not have to rent a car and take it across boarders. Then we'll just rent a car in Inverness and drop off in Edinburgh.
Thanks again!!
