Ireland tent camping

Can anyone heartily recommend tent camping in Ireland in August for 10 day trip (Northern loop)? Looking to save money for family of 4 by popping up simple tent every few days and b&b or hostel the other days. Hope to pack light in little rental car. Wanted camper van as we did in New Zealand, but very pricey looking in Ireland. Suggestions? Thanks!

You will have to stay in commercial campgrounds, since camping "just anywhere" is not legal. You can find a lot of pertinent information at www.totalcampingireland.ie. Since August is the height of the tourist season you will probably need to book ahead for a spot. I'm a little curious, though, about how you are going to pack light if you are carrying a tent and sleeping bags for 4?

Hi and thanks for the link. We pack the tent in one bag and pads in another and each person mashes the very mashable sleeping bags in their luggage. I think it may be a problem though since everyone recommends getting a very small car. Room for luggage, but not people! I see that one can also rent campers at the camp sites. Hostels will cost about $100 night for 4; am wondering what a reasonable farm stay or basic b&b for 4 would cost? We tend to avoid b&bs since often 2 rooms are required for a family of 4.

Over the course of four trips, I can say that EVERY B&B I have stayed at has had family rooms containing a full bed, and two twins. And more than one had sleeping space for five. I haven't been recently, so I don't know what it would cost, but you can look at www.discoverireland.com for a list of accomodations and contact information.
