I'm headed on a Rick Steves Ireland tour this spring. Among many other stops, the tour overnights in Galway, Westport, and Portrush. Any suggestions for not-to-miss activities, restaurants, or pubs in these spots? I need ideas for my free time. Will be on foot, staying centrally. Thanks!
Galway is a fantastic town. You will be able to find pleanty of 'craic'. In Galway City off of Shop Street you will find a wonderful pub called "The Quay's (pronounce: Keys). The interior itself is a pleasure to the eye it is a very old building and they have wonderful food and good enteraintment. If you have a bit of time on your own during the day in Galway enjoy walking up and down the medevil streets. If you are their on a Sat there is a pedestrian market w/local craft vendors; this is usualy near the 'old' st. nicholas; which i am sure will be on RS tour of Galway city.
My first memory of Westport is 'flowers' the town just bursts w/flowers hanging everywhere. It is a good walking town. If you get the chance to go to Clare Island in Clew Bay you will not be disappointed. Most tourist go to Aran Islands and the Irish go to Clare Island.
Galway is a great city with much to do and see. My husband and I wished that we had spent more time there on our trip. I am not sure if you already have a place to stay or night, but I would highly recommend Joan's Periwinkle B&B. She is a wonderful hostess and went above and beyond to help us around the city (even gave us a ride to town one night) and make us feel at home. Her home is beautiful and the breakfasts were great in the morning. E-mail me if you would like contact info for her. Hope you have a wonderful trip!! Although, it's hard not to in Ireland!
