Ireland-Smaller towns and walking

Hi-
We're in the early stages of planning our first trip to Ireland. We plan to spend a couple days in Dublin and hit several of the big tourist attractions, but I would also like to spend a few nights in smaller towns, "off the beaten path," as it were. We're looking for suggestions for towns or villages where we could do a bit of shopping or sight-seeing in the afternoon, have several rounds at a great pub, and then be in walking distance of a decent small hotel or b&b. Your suggestions are appreciated.

Both Dingle and Kenmare are great places to stay. Lots to do nearby for day trips and lots of good pub for the evening. Both are charming towns.

I would also suggest Kinsale on southern coast and Clifden on the west coast. Dingle is my very favorite, though.

Doolin is a good choice, too, close to the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren. Great pubs with lots of live music there.

you know what we did? While driving from point A to B, we stopped at whatever looked welcoming. Stopped for some pub food, a guinness and shot, some gab and so on. We happened upon two places, between Kinsale, which is a lovely city, and Waterford. I couldn't recall either name though. The point being, explore!

Remember, the best way to start a conversation with a local is to by them a beverage.

Kilkenny a great town for shopping and meeting people. Killarney is good but touristy, but there are great local places. If you want a friendly resort town on the ocean, Tramore is the place and Waterford is close by. Kenmare, Dingle, and Ballybunion are three of my favorite small places.
