Ireland September Itinerary Assistance Requested

I will be traveling with my 21 yr old daughter to Ireland for 14 days early Sep. 2008 and I planned our itinerary. I'm wondering if anyone could look it over for me and tell me if I'm planning too much or whether it is a good itinerary? If anyone has any improvements I would be most happy to hear them! I have only been to Ireland once, four years ago, and that was on a bus tour.

Day 1 - Arrive Dublin, Rent car, Drive to Trim. Stay at Brogans Guesthouse and Bar- 3 nights. Tour Trim Castle, Town of Trim, Newgrange, Hill of Tara, Kells High Cross

Day 4 - Travel to Galway. Stay at Seabreeze Lodge - 4 nights. Tour Aran Islands, Cliffs of Moher, Connemara, Dunguaire Castle(Medieval Banquet), Kilfenora High Cross

Day 8 - Travel to Dingle Peninsula. Stay at Milestone House - 4 nights. Tour Slea Head Drive, Archaeological Tours, Blasket Island Trip. Gap of Dunloe Pony and Cart Ride, Muckross House.

Day 12 - Travel to Rock of Cashel. Stay at Joy's Rockside House - 2 nights. Tour Rock of Cashel.

Day 14 - Travel to Dublin. Stay at Evergreen B & B. Leave for home on Day 15.

Connie, just returned from 9 days in Ireland...I think you will be fine with your time frame.....by the way you will love Muckross House and the grounds.... - it is just outside Killarney .......

You can always adjust your schedule if your reservations are flexible....Dingletown on the Dingle Peninsula is wonderful.

I would love to hear about the Rock of Cashel...

Hi Connie,

I wasn't sure by your itinerary, are you planning to spend any time in Dublin? If city is not for you, I totally understand, but as cities go (and I am not a city girl) I loved Dublin. It is definitely not the "real" Ireland, but fun for a day or two.
Other than that I think your itinerary looks great. I agree that you will love Dingle and the Slea Head drive is amazing. We didn't make it to Muckross, but would have loved to. Rock of Cashel is awesome too, great views. Have a great time!

I'm not sure what you mean if our schedule is flexible? Yes it most certainly is flexible. Are you suggesting we stay longer on the Dingle Peninsula? Our B & B is in Dingletown so we'll be there 4 nights.

As I mentioned above, I did take a bus tour 4 years ago and we toured Dublin city. I know my daughter would probably be interested in seeing the city because she has never been there. I wouldn't really know where to stay if we spent more time there or should I just check into staying longer at Evergreen B & B?

Thank you everyone for your great suggestions!

I would say if you already have a place to stay in Dublin and you wanted to spend extra time there you might as well ask if you can extend your stay instead of trying to find a new place.
Please feel free to PM me if you have any other questions.

I'm not sure why you would want to spend two nights in Cashel. I would suggest giving more time to Dublin. The Rock is wonderful, but there's not much else to see in Cashel.

I would maybe change the first three nights to one, change the two nights in Cashel to one, and spend the extra time in Dublin. That way you'd have time to see Glendalough and the Wicklow Mountains. Otherwise, your schedule looks nice and relaxed.

While at Rock of Cashel, you may want to visit Kilkenny. Have not been there, but have seen many posts on this web sight regarding Kilkenny and what a great smaller town to visit....lively pub scene etc. We intend to visit Kilkenny and Cashel next time we are in Ireland. Not too far away is Waterford crysal factory, and the famine ship at New Ross, both worthwhile stops.

This is how one should see Ireland. Very well laid out. You'll have a little slack time, so I suggest Kilkenny as a stay over instead of Cashel, maybe a side trip to Dunmore East too.

In September, going through the Sally Gap, purple wild heather is in bloom still, with white sheep free grazing as a contrast. Glendalough is also a good spot

I agree with some of the previous posts. Two nights in Cashel could certainly be cut down to one and as much as I enjoy Dingle four days there could also be cut down and add time to the area south of Dublin such as Killkenny,Wicklow Mts.,Glendalough etc.

If you enjoy live theater Dublin has several, Gate,Abby,Gaiety, plus several others.

Overall I like your schedule, you are taking the time to see each area well instead of just hurrying through, getting in the car and tearing down the road to the next stop. If you are able to talk to the local people you will find many interesting sights in almost every area that do not make the guide books but are certainly worth a visit.

I agree with the others that you've done well. Most people cram too many activities into their days, but you've created a reasonable schedule. So reasonable, in fact, that you can (as others have suggested) cut a few days out and add to your time in Dublin. I would cut a day at Trim, a day at Dingle (not Dingletown, FYI) and a day at Cashel.

I stayed at Milestone House in Dingle last month. You'll have a good time there. Michael and Barbara are great hosts.

Connie I agree with several of the other suggestions that you have 3 days in Dingle, and try to stay a day and a night in Glendalough. One day would be fine for Cashel.

Dublin is very interesting .....I bet your daughter would enjoy it and it isn't so overwhelming that you will experience the "craziness". Do be aware ...there is ALOT of traffic in Dublin.

By flexible, I meant ...if you haven't made all your hotel reservations ......or can cancel them....you can enjoy Dingle Peninsula and more of the Ring of Kerry....if the spirit moves you!
