My husband & I are going to Ireland & I've been reading about "auto clampers" & how they have become the "scourge" of Irish towns-any advice?
Park legally. They are only a "scourge" to those who don't.
Not quite good enough advice. The autoclampers who cause problems in the UK and Ireland are not the people who clamp you if you park illegally on a public road. The problem is with con artists who invite people to park on privately-owned land (where they have the right to charge whatever they like), deliberately rules that are impossible to obey, and then clamp cars and demand huge sums of money to release them. Things got so bad in the UK that private car clamping was banned last year, although not in Northern Ireland due to a different legal system. I don't know what the current situation is in the Republic. So broadly speaking the advice is to park only on the street or in what looks like a reputable and properly organised private car park and stay well away from anywhere that looks like a vacant lot with a sign up. Or preferably get local advice first before you park.
