Ireland - Military Road over Sally Gap?

We are going to Killarney Ireland next month. We are planning on spending the night in Dublin then driving down to Powerscourt, and then on to Glendalough thru the Military Road and Sally Gap as recommend in Rick's Ireland guide. However the map is not that great and when I look on an real map, the map drawn in the guide book doesn't actually match up to the roads. Any one driven the area and know the best way to go? I've seen fantasic pictures of the area with waterfalls and wonderful views, but no real discription of locations.

After Glendalough we are heading north again, up to Roscrea to see Leap Castle and then down to Killarney where we are staying for 5 nights. Hoping to see as much as possible, driving the Ring of Kerry and Dingle Pennisula, going to Ross Castle, Muckross House, Blarney Castle, Skellig Island etc.

On the way home we will be driving west along the southern coast stoping at the Rock of Cashel and Kilkenny Castle(if we have time)and then spending the night in either the Wexford or Waterford area before taking the boat over to Wales the next morning.

My main questions is in regardes to the Military Road and Sally gap, but if anyone has any suggestions on places to stay, things to do etc. on the rest of my trip please feel free to add them as well.

Thanks in advance!

Blarney Castle, near Cork, is closer to the Rock of Cashel than to the Killarney area, so you will want to see that on your back across the south, not while you are staying in Killarney.
