Ireland Itinerary Question - Please Help!

Hi guys:

I am planning a 12 day trip to Ireland in October, and am using Rick Steves' tour as a guide for my plans. I noticed that he has the group leaving Dublin, driving through the Wicklow Mountains, seeing the Rock of Cashel, then arriving in Kinsale. My question is what time should I be leaving Dublin to make this trip possible? Also, anyone recommend a lighthouse anywhere? I tried to incorporate Hook Head, but it is kind of messing up my plans since its out of the way. Thanks in advance for the help!

I suspect the tour will depart Dublin after breakfast to make the trip.

Hi Lisa,

It's seems to me a real push to get from Dublin to Kinsale in one day. If you are driving, I wouldn't even attempt it. In the Wicklow Mountains, you may want see Glendalough, the round tower and ruins there, and you would certainly want to take time for the tour of the Rock of Cashel, one of the most significant historic site in Ireland. It could easily be late afternoon by then. How long will you be in Dublin? There are lighthouses at Howth (ne), off Drogheda (east of Newgrange--a great Neolithic site north of Dublin), and of course, down the coast. Are you particularly interested in Kinsale or Co.Cork? If not, I'd suggest heading West from Cashel to see the Dingle Peninsula and then north to Co. Clare (Cliffs of Moher). Ireland looks like a small country, but driving takes longer than it looks. Rather than rushing, select the few places you really want to see this trip. Enjoy!

Hey Lisa,
I would say that it really depends on what you are wanting to see for sure and how long you want to spend. We left Dublin and stopped at Glendalouch and ended up spending about 3 hours there because we decided to walk to the top lake. The monastic ruins there are very cool and if it's a nice day and you want to look around you could spend a lot of time there, but less if you don't do the walk to the top lake. And way less if you are not interested in stopping at Glendalouch at all. Rock of Cashel is also a stop you can spend a lot of time at, I would say 2 hours minimum because you will probably want to catch the film at the beginning. Depending on how early you want to leave and how ambitious of a traveller you are, you could probably do this in one day, but you'll be pretty tired and arrive in Kinsale pretty late. You will want to check times that the Rock of Cashel in open. Hope you have a great time on your trip and feel free to email me if you have any other questions.

Hi Lisa,----Teddi is 100% correct. Take your time.

There is a lighthouse located at the Old Head of Kinsale a few miles outside of town. The Lusitania was sunk a few miles offshore from here.

Yes, through the Wicklow Mountains to Cashel. You can spend a couple hours there easily. There won't be any arriving in Kinsale that day though. That's a long haul. Kilkenny is about 40K down is where I'd stay the 1st night. See Kilkenny then head to Kinsale. If you like beef, the Bulman is Kinsale fantastic

Leave Dublin EARLY, just before sunrise . It's a bear getting out of town.
