Ireland in Winter

I am planning a trip to Ireland in January 2010, because that is when both my husband and I can get time off together. Since it is the dead season over there, any advice on things to do, avoid and site seeing at that time of year from anyone who has been there then would be greatly appriciated!!

I've been there twice in February. You'll have a more limited selection of B&Bs because many close over the winter months. I have to say, though, that more seem to be open during the winter now than on our first trip. Some tourist attractions will close or have limited hours over the winter as well (many are closed Nov.1-Feb. 28). There will be fewer trad music sessions in the pubs, mostly limited to weekends, Thursday-Saturday nights.

But the big plus is that there are no crowds. It's a perfect time to see Newgrange, or the Book of Kells, or Blarney Castle, or the Rock of Cashel without anyone in your way (or your pictures). It doesn't get nearly as cold as you are used to in NH, so you'll be fine walking around -- save indoor things for days when it rains. The wind can be wicked at the Cliffs of Moher, but the new visitors center will help with that. Have a great trip -- you'll find plenty to do and see!

Nancy, thanks for info- that is helpful. I am in LOVE with no crowds, so that sounds like a good trade off for shorter hours.
