I'm planning a trip to Ireland in early April 2011. I would prefer May in terms of longer days, more attractions being open and the chance for better weather but am locked into April. Has anyone been there during that time, and did it seem like a good time to go?
We were just their May 4th. I don't know how early in April you are going. The days were already long and things seemed to be up and running every where, but not crowded at all. When we first got there it was dry but very cold. They had some northern cold weather coming down. But all these weather conditions seemed to be exceptions not rules. The weather is crazy every where. So you may have great weather.
My first trip to Ireland was in early April (we arrived on the 9th, I think). We had no problems at all with things we wanted to see being closed. There were no crowds anywhere, the weather was great (though in the Knockmealdown Mountains and at the Cliffs of Moher the wind was constant and VERY brisk). We mostly wore tshirts and sweatshirts, with the occasional head covering. We had rain one day. Otherwise, the gorse and rhododendrons were blooming everywhere, the grass was green, and there were new lambs in the fields. I would highly recommend April.
We spent the last week of April 2009 in Ireland. The weather was alternately rainy (not hard or constant rain), sunny, cool, and warmish. It was never bad enough to keep us from doing things. Bring layers and you will be fine. We did not find anything closed, and we got better deals at the B&B's because if was still considered off season.
I have been to Ireland in April. We had some episodes of sunshine, but it rained every day. Some days were windy enough to blow your wig off, and the rain came down in "sheets" some days. We did not slow down for the weather (although some days the driving was much slower), did everything we wanted to even in the rain, and had a great time. This expereience would not prevent me from going in April again. Just go prepared for all types of weather by wearing layers and a good rain shell.
I always go to Ireland expecting it to rain
at least once a day and when it doesn't I am thrilled. I have been there in the middle of April, going back this coming April 17, and the weather while not always outstanding is certainly nothing to deter you from your plans for any great length of time. PLUS there is a great deal to be said for finding a small country pub on a cold, windy and rainy afternoon, one with a nice turf fire and enjoying great conversation with a drink in your hand be it Guinness or tea. Slainte!!
