Ireland for St. Patricks Day

Does anyone have any suggestions on what city to stay in for St Patricks Day? I would only imagine there is alot to do, but there is also a lot of cities. Has anyone ever been there for St. Patricks Day?

Hi Emily
Every city in Ireland usually have a St Patrick's Day Parade and a lot of towns hold smaller parades (these consist mostly of tractors and vans covered in green cloth!) I'd suggest sticking to the cities, there are only a few of these in the south ie. Dublin, Waterford, Cork and Galway.

Dublin and Cork festivals would be the biggest, then Galway and Waterford. If it was me I'd go for Dublin. It is by far the biggest and most exciting. Also the Club (not county) football and hurling finals are on the 17th this year in Dublin so these will draw a few extra people.

The Dublin parade is televised each year and goes on for a few hours and actual festival lasts 5 days. www.stpatricksday.ie has some good info and a youtube video

Thanks. I think we will head to Dublin. Do you have any suggestions of hotels or hostels to stay at in Dublin?

I'm staying at Avalon House (hostel) near St. Stephen's Green next week. Two nights for $35 in a 4-bed dorm room. Though I doubt it would be that cheap for St. Paddy's Day. :)

Check out the Rick Steves' 2009 Ireland guide (I got it for Christmas). It covers Dublin in great detail, with lots of accomodation recommendations (including Avalon House).
