We are considering staying in Ennis on our trip to Ireland and were wondering if it's possible to do day trips to Dingle and Ring of Kerry from there. The driving times I'm getting from Mapquest seem to be different than what Rick has in his book. So now I'm confused....
Thanks!
I guess anything is possible but staying at least 2 nights in Dingle and having an entire day for the Peninsula is best.
Mapping software uses speed limits to compute time, I think. If you keep up with prevailing traffic on freeways you get there faster than expected. On back roads with lots of traffice (the SW peninsualae) you'll get there more slowly. I've never figured out how RS computes driving time -- it's never taken me as long as what he says.
For what it's worth, I put about three thousand miles on my gps in Ireland a couple of months ago. It has an 'average moving speed' feature. The number at the end was 41 mph. Very little of the driving was on freeways. Dingle and Kerry would have been below that.
Gratis comment: Beara is better than Kerry by a long shot.
Haven't seen Dingle yet, so can't comment there, but we were so very charmed by little Ennis. Spent two nights there at the Old Ground Hotel, including a guided walk of the town with native Jane O'Brien and a visit to nearby Bunratty Castle and Durty Nelly's pub. A wonderful little place with good trad and friendly people.
