We are thinking about a trip to Ireland in October or February (Feb, because friends could join us then) We will be driving and arriving in Dublin and ending in Shannon. We plan on B&B's maybe a Castle and a Hotel in Dublin. We are planning about a week. How is the weather in February and would we be sorry? We did travel from Rome to Venice last February with stops along the way and loved it, but aren't quite sure about Ireland. We would appreciate any advice you have to give!
Thanks,
Judy
I've been to Ireland twice in late February and it was great! On my first trip it was sunny and relatively warm when I arrived (I wore a sweatshirt instead of a jacket most of the time). It was bright overcast or sunny all week, the grass was green and things were beginning to flower. On one day there was a fairly persistent mist (Ireland's famous "soft weather") but otherwise no rain. On the very last day, in Dublin, there was a bitter wind and one or two flakes of snow (literally).
On my second February trip, it was also bright overcast or sunny, but it was cooler. We wore lighter winter jackets, but never needed things like gloves except for a bitterly cold early morning at the Cliffs of Moher, where it is always windy. Nights were generally crisp and clear. You'll find the weather to be milder than what we are used to in Illinois in February -- and there are no crowds anywhere. I think it's a great time to go.
My sister and family were in Ireland in February a couple of years back - loved it, but froze. Italy is no comparison - I'd vote for October, but if you are prepared for cold (and always for rain), either will be fine.
Ashford Castle - one of the most beautiful castles you can stay in has been having great 50% off "B&B" deals on their web site: 50% plus free breakfast!
We got two rooms for the price of one, free breakfast, and wound up getting a free upgrade. :)
