OK, let's try this again...we are going to be staying at the Heritage Resort outside on Portarlington for 6 days in early October. We would like to do day trips from there and see castles, scenery, national parks, villages and get into the local culture as much as possible, good local food (not interested in fancy restaurants), historic sites, pubs (of course), we love arts and crafts, and are not interested in "tourist-traps"...what suggestions do you have
You're about a 1 1/2 hrs from the Boyne Valley. Newgrange, Knowth, Hill of Tara, Trim Castle, etc are worth a day.
The ROK is a little over an hour away and you could come back through Kilkenny which is worth about 3 hours.
Glendalough is just over an hour and it's worth several hours. You could go back via Powerscourt and/or Sally Gap.
Clonmacnoise is also just over an hour away and is the other "big" ecclesiastical site in Ireland.
These are just a few things off the top of my head. My list is in order of my personal recommendations.
In October the days will be short and the weather is typically quite "soft."
Head into Dublin. You're really not that far and there's a huge amount of sites to see there.
In the other direction, Wexford. Another great city.
