Ireland car rental

Has anyone used Irish Car Rentals(eirecar.com)? What was your experiencewith them like? We are renting an automatic for a week with full insurance. They are about $200.00/wk less, but we want to know if there is a catch.

I'm looking to book a rental car too. I looked at the website and an automatic compact is about $450 for the week. Maybe it is the time of year? Do you have a coupon code as I would love to find an automatic for that price but have been highly unsuccessful. I can find the manual for those prices though (which might not be back since I drive a manual now).

Sorry about the confusion. I meant that Irish Car Rental rates appear to be about $200 less per week than the other car rental firms. I was wondering if there are any pitfalls to look out for such as extra fees when you pickup or return the car. Have other travelers been satisfied with their experience with them. This is our 1st time to travel to IR and we want to travel by car.

There's no catch. I use them every time I go to Ireland. They have wonderful, helpful staff and a US 800 number to call if you have questions before or after. Oh, and if you return the car with a full gas tank instead of an empty one, they refund the fuel charge that is initially charged. For my most recent one-week rental this turned out to be a better deal for us. What I spent on gas was less than the initial charge.

We rented I don't know, from Avis or Hertz. ANYWAY, as a married couple in the U.S. and most of the EU (at least anywhere we've gone which is alot) your spouse as a second driver needs to be on the contract but it doesn't change the price. No so in Ireland. It added, if memory serves (it's been 2 years) 50% to the overall cost. We choked it down but yikes. Check it out before you go. P.S. If you know how to drive a stick go with it as driving is easy in Ireland and traffic is light outside of the burbs.

To clarify Marie's point: you aren't forced to list two drivers just because you are a married couple, you just pay extra if you both wish to drive.

I've used ICR twice and have not had a problem. This time, I waived CDW using my World MasterCard and had no problems on returning the car.

Their prices have always been substantially lower than other quotes I've received as well. The cars have been in good condition (both times renting an Opel Zaphira) - one year an auto, the next time a manual.

Your experience may vary . . .

Because of prior bad experience, I would suggest you take the CDW rather than relying on ANY credit card's insurance, no matter what they may tell you.

Check the deductible left after the CDW is added in. Many auto rental companies are upping their deductible to cut their costs of insurance, thus placing more of the financial burden on customers if there happens to be damage to the car. You may want to inquire about "super CDW" to bring your deductible, and thus your financial exposure, down to zero.

I leave for Ireland in two weeks and I made my car reservation with Autoeurope. When you go to their website and input what you want it gives various choices. I called and spoke to someone at Autoeurope and she explained that there are several companies that they get cars from. We talked about the super CDW that gives you $0 deductible rather than a large one. One car company they deal with (sorry, can't remember which one) doesn't have the $0 ded. option. Wouldn't you know that the car I picked (you can't tell which one at the time) was that company. I called and switched the reservation, and actually saved a little money in the process.
