Ireland by Train and Bus

I have 4 days total in Ireland, Flying in and out of Dublin. I have been to Dublin before and don't really care to spend a whole lot of time there per say...but I would like to get out and see some of that great Irish countryside I have always imagined! I can't really do a car rental, so I'm just sticking with public transport.

Anybody have any suggestions on where to go and what to see in my limited time? Places that I can get to by bus and/or train? Any suggestions are appreciated! Thank you!

Will you be in Ireland for 4 full days, or are you travelling to/from on some of those days?

The Irish rail system is not that comprehensive. The bus system is much better for getting out into the countryside, but buses may not run as regularly as you need. And public transportation to specific sightseeing venues in the country may also prove a little challenging and time consuming.

You may want to just base yourself in Dublin (or perhaps somewhere just outside of it like Howth or Dun Laoghaire) so you can easily take a variety of day tours to the country.

Both Bus Eireann and Irish Rail offer day tours out of Dublin. For details, click on the links Kent posted.
