I've made several trips to Ireland in recent years and have never had a problem booking as I went. In some cases, I just stopped somewhere that looked good and asked if they had a room. Get a B&B directory from the Tourist Information at the airport. It will show you what B&Bs are in each area, along with addresses, phone numbers, and prices (and dates they are open, in case you are traveling in the off-season). Unless you are traveling to only the very most popular locations in the height of the summer tourist season, you should find plenty of choices.

You should research some of the areas you're likely to wind up in each night and make notes about likely B&B's. Then call ahead when you see where you're going to wind up. But we've had some fine experiences at B&B's that we just happened onto when it was time to call it a day.

Jane, it all depends on when and where you are traveling. Bank holidays or during the summer holidays, I would always book ahead..if going to a popular location or a place where there might be an event or festival on.

Off season, no worries.

You don't mention when you are travelling, but make sure there are not any major festivals going on before you arrive in a city or town that you don't have a reservation for. For example, Galway has a big arts festival in July and that can make it much harder to find an available B&B at the last minute.

I'm going to spend most of next month in Irleand. I have not made reservations, nor will I.

I think I would be more rushed if I DIDN'T have reservations because I'd be rushing to find a place early before it got too late. I enjoyed finding places by researching RS, Tripadvisor, and some others, and setting an itinerary. I now have reservations at some of the nicer places at my destinations. Two even had "Internet" specials that have since been filled. If you totally wing it, you'd be much more adventurous than me! Either way, I'm sure you'll have a great time,

I just returned from a trip to Ireland. We booked our first two nights in advance for a B&B in Killarney and then just took our chances from there since we weren't sure just where our travels would take us. We would go to the TI and they were able to direct us to places with vacancies. We travelled on a budget and our target was 65 to 75 euros per night. We actually got some very good deals, 4 star hotels for 70 to 75 euros a night (double) with full breakfast included. Since those hotels had vacancies rather than let their rooms go empty they lower the rate. These same rooms normally go for much higher prices and were not the type of accomodations I would have searched out in advance because I would have thought they were out of my price range. I would never have stayed there if it had not been for such good last minute deals. The TIs were able to recommend multiple B&Bs and hotels with vacancies. I'd take my chances if I were you and let your travels be a little more spontaneous. We had an evening flight out of Ireland so we didn't have to worry about a hotel for that last night. If I had needed to be at the airport early on that last day though, I would have booked my last hotel/B&B in advance.
