Ireland 7 Days- Mid October HELP!

Any Help is much appreciated! Originally my trip was planned with my best friend and unfortunately she got called up to be stationed two months earlier than planned and she leaves before our trip begins. Luckily my mom has decided to join me on my adventure however she leaves half way through Ireland (I am spending one week in Germany and one week in Ireland). I fly into Dublin on Monday afternoon and fly out of Dublin the following Monday afternoon. My mom flies in with me and flies out on Thursday afternoon from Dublin. In summary I am looking for recommendations as I have never been to Ireland on what to see and the easy route to travel as I will be traveling 4 days solo. What things must I not miss? Is it best to rent a car on arrival?

Arriving on Monday from Germany, you will have about 2.5 days for your Mom to see some of Ireland. You have a couple of options - stay in the Dublin area, see the city, take half-day tours to Glendalough and/or Newgrange to see some countryside, OR you could set out for Galway to see the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren, Doolin, or maybe the Connemara area. It's tricky suggesting transportation. If you take the first option, you really won't need a car until you are on your own - but a shorter rental will be more expensive. If you take the second option, you could route yourself so that you rent a car for the whole week, but can swing by Dublin on the Thursday to get your mom to the plane.
