I'm planning my first trip to Ireland and have found a pkg. that is quite reasonable. I'll have a car and fly into Dublin. 1 night in Dublin, then 2 nights in Cork, 2 nights in Limerick, and then back to Dublin for 1 night before flying home. Are these good cities to see? Are there any good day trips from any of these cities that I should make sure to do? This trip will be middle of Sept.
I highly recommend that you skip Limerick. Go to Dingle after your stay in Cork and spend two nights there. Sit in on a traditional music session in a pub each evening. On your full day in Dingle take the Slea Head Drive. The coastal scenery is marvelous! Stop often to get a close look at historic ruins. Stop in at the Blasket Island Vistor Centre.
Hi, The cities you've chosen are fine but are all cities. You might want to stay part of your time in smaller towns(Killarney is touristy but fun, Dingle is really pretty, Kinsale is right near cork but a nice town on the water). Bunratty Castle is near Limerick and nice. September is usually easy to find accommodation except on Saturday nights. Enjoy your trip!!
Thank you Sherri & Tim for your thoughts. This pkg. has our hotels set in these cities which is why I was looking for day trips from them. I agree Sherri, the small villages are so much more captivating. As long as we have a car, I figured we are not stuck to stay in a city like Limerick but rather sitesee away during the day and come back to the city at night to enjoy the rest. & pubs.
From Limerick you could do trips to Lahinch, Cliffs of Moher, the Burren, Bunratty, etc. From the Cork area you could do Blarney, Cobh, Kinsale, Cahir, Rock of Cashel, Waterford. In Dublin be sure to go to Kilmainham Gaol, take a walk down Grafton St and listen to the musicians, take the Georgian house tour at Merrion Square.
Thanks Nancy! This is exactly the info I was looking for. I hope these places you mention are within no more than a 2 hr drive from each city. I've read that travelling by road is a slow process.
If you're only going to be in Dublin for one night after you arrive and one night before you fly home, then you may want to spend all your time in the city. Be sure to see the Book of Kells on display at Trinity College. However, if you decide to do a day trip, this would be a good one: Glendalough, Powerscourt Gardens, and Wicklow Mountains. Glendalough, or the Glen of two lakes, is one of the most treasured sites in Co. Wicklow. The monastery that was there was founded in the sixth century and is steeped in Irish history and culture. You could easily drive from Cork to Killarney, see a bit of the national park, and return to Cork in the evening.
Thanks Tim! I'm going to look into all your suggestions...sounds wonderful!
You can use www.viamichelin.com to see driving times between towns. Add about 25% to their estimated times to get a better idea of real Irish drive times.
