We are flying into and out of Dublin and will have 10 days to explore Ireland. I am a avid photographer and want to photograph a mix of scenic towns along with the expected beautiful landscapes. We don't want to spend all day in the car and hope to get out and walk/hike around. Another thing to know is that we don't need to "see it all" and will visit Ireland again if we like this trip. We do love a pint or two as well :-) but want to make sure that wherever we stay is quiet and not near bartime/pub noise. Here is our rough itinerary let me know what you think. Day 1 - Arrive in Dublin and drive to Kilkenny City area. (Stay in Thomastowne outside of Kilkenny for 2 nights. Explore the area. Day 2 - Still staying in Thomastowne and exploring Day 3- Rock of Cashel then drive through Cork to stay the evening in Kinsale Day 4- up in the air. Should we take a scenic drive along the coast from Kinsale to Skibbereen then up to Kenmare or Killarney (or is there another small town to stay in that is fun?) so that we are within easy striking distance of Dingle for day 5? (We plan on skipping Ring of Kerry and doing the Dingle peninsula instead). Day 5 Dingle Day 6-Dingle Day 7 - Up in the air. We would like to do something that will get us closer to Dublin/Dun Laoghaire/Wicklow area so we don't have to sit in the car so long. Any Ideas? Day 8 - Stay in Dun Laoghaire and see Wicklow Mountains area Day 9- Stay in Dun Laoghaire and go into Dublin Day 10- Stay in Dun Laoghaire and go into Dublin
Day 11- Drive to airport and return home. Go ahead and suggest away!
One suggestion for your Day 4 - stay in Kenmare. It's a really cute little town in a beautiful area.
Hi Scott,
My husband is also an avid photographer and I am a fanatic about researching our trips-on our first trip to a country or region we try to get an overview so we know what we want to revisitHere are my suggestions:........ Day 4, explore the Beara peninsula on your way to Kenmare (check out the movie Ondine to see what Beara Scenery looks like)........Day 5, on your way to Dingle either explore the Ring of Kerry (it is very beautiful) or take a day off from driving and do the Gap of Dunloe jaunting car, return by boat trip (book it in Killarney).......Day 6, explore Dingle and its peninsula-we enjoy Dingle but on a short trip I think one full day is ample......Day 7, use the ferry that takes you to County Clare, explore the Burren, maybe do the Bunratty Castle banquet or drive on to somewhere closer to your day 8 destination......don't miss Glendalough, very beautiful especially on an overcast day.......We also enjoy having pints, single malt, or wine with our dinner, to avoid anxiety about being over very strict European alcohol limits, we always stay at places which either have a nice restaurant on site or are within walking distance of pubs
Cynthia-
Thanks for the input. You have given me some new ideas that I didn't know existed. I do like your idea of staying withing walking distance of the pubs as long as I am careful about location of the lodging it will be fine.
Nancy-
Thanks for the tip I will look into Kenmare.
