How do the Internet booths found on the streets in London work?

According to my sister and parents, none of whom are particularly computer savvy, they are very frustrating, and run out of time before you can accomplish much of anything. I haven't used them, but if they are like the kiosks I encountered at Heathrow a few years ago, I wouldn't waste my time.

I found internet/ computers available in every McDonalds, Burger King and many other place all over London.
Never had to look for than 1 block to find anything.
