I am going to Ireland for 8 days starting on April 5. I am a photographer, and I like driving around and exploring until I am ready to stop. So it doesn't work for me to try to book places to stay before I leave. I am looking for single rooms, and I'd like to keep my lodging expense to about $50-60/night. Is it possible to find places on the spur-of-the-moment that meet my need? I will have a car, so I am open to places that may be a little out of the way. Are the tourist info places helpful in finding lodging?
Thanks, Alan
Hostels definitely meet your requirement and you can get a single room in a hostel for $50-$60.
You may also find some B&Bs and Guesthouses offer small singles for that price. I stayed at a great guesthouse in Portrush, Northern Ireland that cost $50/night for a single with private bath and full breakfast.
The places recommended in Rick Steves Ireland guide tend to run higher than $50-$60 for a private room. You may want to buy a copy of Rough Guide to Ireland - they recommend lodging in all price ranges, but especially budget. I've found the tourist info places somewhat hit or miss. They can generally always find you a room - question is whether it's a room you'd actually want to stay in.
Alan,
I think you will do fine making the arrangements as you need them as the big season will not have started then.
Though many B & B's are out of your price range, there are some in most towns that are less, especally the ones that are "not ensuite", with no private bathroom.
There are several websites that can provide you with specific prices and locations: www.ireland-bnb.com, www.travel-ireland-hotels.com and www.visitireland.com have all been good sources for me.
Have a great trip!
