Inexpensive B & B or hotel near Edinburgh train station

Can anyone suggest one that is close to the train station in Edinburgh? We'll be coming from the Highlands. If there is one near the station AND near Old Town, that would be great!

There have been many threads on places to stay in Edinburgh. You'll probably get many suggestions. I currently have reservations for the Hart Street Guest House. It's about 7 minutes from Waverley Station, 10 minutes to the Royal Mile and about 25 minutes to Edinburgh Castle. As for "inexpensive" it's all relative. My rate is 85 GBP.

I've heard there is a Travel Lodge very close to Waverly Station that's $42 (maybe pounds) for 2 which is very reasonable in my book but it's not the best - rather barren and small. Anyone stayed there?

Two stations serve Edinburgh, but presumably you'll be arriving at Waverly Station, which is situated in the "valley" between New Town and Old Town. Getting to Old Town from there is an easy walk, maybe ten minutes at the most, across Waverly Bridge. Can't recommend a place to stay near Waverly, but there are a good number of hotels and B&B's in that area. Don't be afraid to take a cab from Waverly. It won't cost much and will save you the hassle of hauling luggage and trying to find your place.

We've always stayed at the Royal British Hotel. It is across Princes St. from Waverly Station and just a short (5 min. or so) walk to the Royal Mile. They serve an excellent breakfast and the staff has always been very helpful.

elodie, "Inexpensive" may depend on when you'll be in Edinburgh. The prices tend to increase during the summer when special events like the Edinburgh Festival and the Tattoo are happening. I was checking listings for a trip this year, and found that some of the "chain Hotels" on the Royal Mile were in the range of $300 per night. I eventually booked one of the Hotels suggested in the Guidebook, which is located about 10-minutes by Bus from the Royal Mile. If possible, have a look at the Snapshot Scotland Guidebook (available in E-Book format if you have a compatible Reader), as there are some good listings for inexpensive Hotels a short distance from the Royal Mile. If you're definite on staying "near the station AND near Old Town", I suspect you'll have to increase your budget and it WON'T be "Inexpensive". Happy travels!

You all have given me some really good info. Guess I'll be prapared to pay more if I want to be close to the station and the Royal Mile. I'm leaving in 3 weeks so I'd better make some decisions quickly! Thank you for your help.
