Spending 48 hours in Iceland is a option that just popped up so I am posting this question prior to doing any research. I might be taking Icelandic Airlines (any opinions) from London to Seattle, and am thinking of getting off the plane and spending two half days and one full day in Iceland (land around noon on Friday, get back on the plane around noon on Sunday). I see that there are organized tours that cost around $100 for 8 - 10 hours. Should I do this, or is driving in Iceland similar to driving in the USA so that renting a car for a day might be an option?
Renting a car is an option and doable. However, it depends on where you are going. We went into some off road areas where I would not have been comfortable driving on my own and was glad that I was on a tour. Also, being on a tour means not getting lost and wasting precious time, so that is a definite plus. Generally I am a very independent traveler, and for Reykjavik/ Blue Lagoon you can do it on your own easy. For anything outside the city, I personally would use a tour.
