My partner and I are thinking about a self-drive in and around Manchester/ London in late July/ early August 2008. Can anyone advise of an itinerary or travel agent that specializes in such a thing?

FYI, I would not self drive in London. Expensive, congested and confusing, plus the public transport is superb. Better to pick up a car as you are departing the city and avoid driving in London all together.
Just rent a car at Heathrow and drive up - a one way rental might be more expensive, but you could do a big loop to depart out of Heathrow. Just be aware that the second half of July and early August can be VERY busy because thats when the kids have their short summer break (about 6 weeks). So you should probably book accommodation ahead of time, at least in locations where there's not much option.
