Heading to Iceland for 5 days in early September-- expect to rent a car and drive around to see some of the natural beauty of the place. Any suggestions of things to do in or out of Rejkavik?
Iceland is wonderful, and I would think September would be a beautiful time to visit. We were there in April 2010, and our return was delayed due to volcanic activity. Boo-hoo. We were grateful for the extra 3 days we spent there. Most of our time was spent in Reykjavik. We rented a car for only 1 day - too short - to explore the surrounding area. Were I to do it again, I would spend 3 or 4 or 5 days total in Reykjavik (which is a very nice city, if not on the scale of Paris or London or Rome), and several more out and about. We drove much of the "golden circle" (which is not actually a circle), and loved Gullfoss waterfall and Thingvellir. Next time we go, we will see more of the north part of the country. Iceland has a geography unlike anything I've ever seen. It's a bit of a moonscape. We would see a collection of 10 or so 5' tall evergreen trees and joke that that constituted an Icelandic wilderness. But it's stunning in its starkness and raw beauty. I can hardly wait to go back and spend more time there.
