We were thinking of taking a quick 4 day trip to Iceland this april[INVALID] is it too cold/dark still? What are the best months for travel? Suggestions on things to do/see? Thanks!
Iceland in April. For Reykjavik at sea level, most likely weather in mid-April is cool and damp, but there's about 15 hours of light even in April. The avg temp in Reykjavik in mid-April, over the last 15 years, has been day time temps of high 30's to low 40's, and an average day time high temp (usually about 4pm) topping out at 43. About 2/3 to 3/4 of the days in mid-April have had some precip, either rain or snow. Sunset doesn't occur until about 9pm there in mid-April and civil twilight keeps it from getting totally dark for another hour. Note that the above temp data is for sea level only, and that avg temps decrease about 3.5 degrees F for every thousand feet of elevation gain. This data is based on historical averages over a 15-year period, but is still just averages - but hopefully will give you an idea.
Cold? Yes. Too cold? No. Dark? No. We were in Iceland this past April (2010) and it stayed light until 10:00 pm or so. Which isn't surprising, since 2 months later there will be hardly any darkness. Weather was clear and cold. Every morning when we awoke it was 0 C (32 F) and together with a wind of 10 mph or so it was cold enough to take your breath away. Still, it was amazing how quickly we acclimated and after the first day or two it didn't feel all that cold. During the day it would warm up to about 40 F or so. We had planned on staying only 5 nights, but due to volcano activity our return was delayed 3 nights. By that time we were completely enthralled with Iceland and the extra 3 nights was the best thing that happened to us (even better when IcelandAir reimbursed us for the cost of the extra 3 nights). I don't know how typical our experience was (well, the volcano experience is atypical so don't expect it), but we loved our time there in April and have promised ourselves we will go back, perhaps next near. Have a great trip!
