Iceland - 2 days - Recommendations?

My wife and I will be stopping over in Iceland on the way to Scandinavia this summer. 2-3 days likely, with a homebase in Reykyavik. We'd appreciate your suggestions. We're fairly well travelled and do the backpack thing.

Hi Greg, A friend and I, in our 60s, spent almost 3 weeks in Iceland in Aug. '09 - B.V.! with 3 days in Reykjavik before and after our drive all around the island. Lots to walk and see and EAT and do right in town. Plus, of course, bus trips/tours to sites close by - the Golden Circle, Blue Lagoon, etc. Wonderful people, "interesting" language - a very positive trip. Enjoy,
Courtney

With 2-3 days, stick around Reykjavik. The Blue Lagoon is awesome, the Golden Circle very nice and worth your time. Another option would be a drive along the South Coast to the glaciers.

Hi Greg, I'm not a big fan of bus tours to begin with, so I was all set to rent a car when we went. A local tour operator started offering a week-long package (flights, hotel in Reykjavik and sightseeing tours) and at such an incredibly low introductory price for the first departure, that we jumped at it. Turns out that the tours were really worth it! So for 2-3 days, I agree with the suggestions of the Blue Lagoon and Golden Circle. The Blue Lagoon is near the airport and one package combines the airport shuttle, with the Blue Lagoon on the way out to the airport (your luggage stays safely on the bus) - civilized!!! Reykjavik is interesting and has a lot to offer of itself. There is a very good transit bus system in the city. It's just weird to have light almost round the clock in summer. Friday and Saturday nights in summer are non-ending party central downtown. If your nights fall on a week-end, you may want to book a room a little out from the action, like the area where the Park Inn is, if sleep is important to you. Just be careful with the hot water... it is piped into the buildings scalding hot, naturally.
