Ok, here's what I found about permission to remain. It looks pretty clear that you can request permission as a long-term visitor as long as you can show that you have the funds to support yourself. It says, "If you fall into one of the following categories", i.e. student, after the general stuff you'd need to request the permission to remain.
Do you think I'm reading it correctly? I would imagine they're main concern is an American taking a job away from an Irish person and also an American who needs healthcare and can't pay for it. I'll have the funds to show I can support myself and also intl. health insurance.
