How would you spend 3 nights and 2 days?

As part of an extended trip to Europe, I'll be spending a good portion in England. I have already planned out several days between Bath and London and figure I have 3 nights and 2 days additional to spend, hopefully wisely. I have never been to England, Scotland or Ireland. I am currently trying to decide between York, Edinburgh or Dublin but I am also certainly open to other suggestions. For those of you familar with Britain and Ireland, how would you spend these additional (and precious) days and why? Thanks in advance for your help and opinions. Tom

How about Glasgow with a train day trip to Edinburgh?

The West Country of England is very beautiful and very interesting as well, so you don't need to spend your time traveling to someplace else. I would rent a car in Bath (if you don't already have one) and spend the days exploring Devonshire and Cornwall. Maybe stay one of the nights at The Masons Arms in Branscomb on the South coast. Or, head up to the Cotswolds and explore there.

If you are in Bath, I endorse Tex's suggestion- go West to Somerset (stay in Dunster), Devon and Cornwall; or Cotswolds, Avebury and Stonehenge. If you are in London train will get you to York (and the moors) or day trips to Salisbury, Winchester, Canterbury

Thanks All. I already have Bath, Stonehenge and the Cotswolds covered. I don't have plans though going further west and southwest of Bath. Is that area better than York, Edinburgh or Dublin?

It isn't better, but is different than large cities. So it depends upon what you want. And it is more convenient. Do some research and you can decide for yourself.

Monte, Tex and Brian have given you great advice. You asked, "Is that area better than York, Edinburgh or Dublin?" It all depends on what sort of things you want to see. I personally think that York is one of the most interesting places to see. York Minster is beautiful, and you need to be there for evensong. The walk along the old city walls is cool. The train trip from York up to Edinburgh is an adventure in itself. You could take the train up to York in the evening, spend that night in York, spend the next day exploring York, late afternoon take the train to Edinburgh, spend the night in Edinburgh, next day exploring Edinburgh, spend the night in Edinburgh, early the next morning take the train back to London. Or you could just spend the 3 nights and two days in York. It would be Number 1. on my list of places you asked about. Edinburgh No. 2. Dublin No. 3. Personal preference. Someone else will come here and say Dublin would be in the No. 1 spot for them. It may help you decide if you go to wikipedia.com and read the profile of each city. Or go to your library or bookstore and look at the Rick Steves travel books sections on each. Hope this helps.

All, I have previously reviewed RS books and I know York is high on RS list. I was just looking for other opinions. Adding time by going west of Bath does make sense (less travel) as does York. I think I'll skip Edinburgh and Dublin until next time. Thanks for your opinions.

My suggestion is Edinburgh! If you have a car it takes about 4-5 hours from Bath to York (with a stop in merry old Nottingham). I stayed at a B&B in York - Oh my gosh the 2 nights I felt spooked - like there was a dark presence in the room! Edinburgh is better!!! The Castle, the mile road, the museum, high tea and friendly taxi cab drivers (the one I rode in said I should have visited Scotland first! lol)
