How warm is April in Scotland?

I know the temperature can change and just because it has been cold doesn't mean it won't be warm and vice versa. But what's the normal? I'm afraid that I'll need a winter coat while I'm in Scotland. If a fleece and a waterproof raincoat is enough, that's great. And I'm looking forward to buying a warm sweater while I'm there, but I don't want to also need a winter coat to keep warm. should I bring a winter jacket/coat with me? Pam

Hi Pam, As you note, past weather is no guarantee of future, but I was okay with a spring coat on two April trips. I remember the temps in Edinburgh were 45-50F range, so a thin coat with layered shirts was enough for me. I did use the gloves I kept in the coat pockets a few times, but never bothered with the knit hat or scarf. Just in general, a keyword for travel clothes is layers. As I watch the snow/sleet/freezing rain swirl outside my New England window, typing .. weather Edinburgh .. into a web search shows 48F and clear. Cheers!

Hi Betsey,
Yeah, it is snowing hard here. I'm getting ready to leave for the weekend. They are letting us go early because we've gotten so much snow today and it just keeps coming. It is this winter's weather that has me worried about this trip. Maybe I'll play it by ear for the trip to Boston. If I need a winter jacket for that, I may just wear it all the way. I've lost a lot of weight and I'm always cold now. And all this snow and freezing temps doesn't make it better. I'm hoping for the best for the trip. Maybe it will be warmer there, even tho it is further north by time mid-April gets here. The charts I've seen say it is usually in the mid-50's there in April. But I know there aren't any guarantees. Hi Pam, Definitely think layers. Layers can be added or removed much more easily than having just one. Speaking of always feeling cold .. if your room has a way to cover the window at night, do so. I enjoy morning sun, but left the curtain down much longer after I realized it was keeping the room warmer. You may need this tip or may not. Also, a pair of Smartwool hiking socks, new. I had medium weight, heavy could work too. Not to wear day time, but keep your feet warm in bed. Also good for night trips to the loo :-) I buy a pair just before each trip so they feel nice and cushy. The days will be nice and long compared to here, always amazed me.
