Is there any way to get out to Stonehenge and Avebury without renting a car?
I don't know any for Avebury so I rented. But if it helps, it is very worthwhile to be walking among the stonecircles and feeling the greatness of the sight. Avebury has 2 large areas across from one another that you can enjoy and ponder once you are there. There is a Pub across street to have a good lunch then return to the site or go to the gift shop. The village it is in is small and off the larger roadways.
Christine,
I don't think so. There used to be a local bus from Salisbury but I don't think it runs there anymore.
You might search for tours that will take you there.
Good luck.
In 2004, I took the "Stones and Bones" tour with Astral Travels. I didn't want to do a tour, but I really wanted to see Stonehenge without having to try my hand at driving on "the wrong side". Believe me, I'm NOT a tour person; I like doing my own thing but I thoroughly enjoyed the tour which included Avebury, Stonehenge, Old Sarum and Salisbury. The groups are small - the vans only have room for about 15 - and the guide on my tour was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The bad news is - I just looked them up - they have gone out of business. However, several other tour groups have taken over the route because it was so popular. They even use the name Stones and Bones. One to try: welcome2britain.com/salisburybustour.htm
They also have small groups and claim to have the same guides as Astral.
For Stonehenge: Take the train from London to Salisbury, then the HOHO bus from Salisbury to Stonehenge, bus runs only during business hours.
Don't know about reaching Avebury, from Stonehenge.
If you want to see both, without a car, consider doing a tour from London. Or some travelers go to Bath and then do a tour from Bath covering both Stonehenge and Avebury.
The other option is to rent a car, which is not a good one from London. You're probably looking at a best option of booking a tour.
Christine,
You might check the England Guidebook for transportation options to both sites.
You might consider planning a day or two in Bath, and taking a day tour to both locations. I used Mad Max Tours and would certainly recommend them (I believe they're listed in the Guidebook). They have a £27.50 full day tour that covers both Stonehenge and Avebury.
Good luck and happy travels!
The London Toolkit site has detailed information about both Stonehenge and Avebury. See this page for public transportation to Stonehenge and this page for public transportation to Avebury.
Not sure of your budget but my wife and I went on a van tour with several stops of interest we found it a good value . look in the rack for a tour by van not bus
The answer is given in the post here titled "FAQ: Answers to Frequently Asked Questions".
Thanks all! We ended up renting a car and went to Avebury first. Parked in the National Heritage site lot and it got broken into. Windows smashed & all our stuff lifted. Never made it to Stonehenge as a result. Have a care if you go there!
