Could someone tell me if I need to make reservations to visit the Aran Islands? I read that the ferries leave from Rossaveel - do I need to make a reservation?
Also, once I land can I walk to Dun Aenghus? How do I get there?

We didn't make reservations. There were place in Galway selling tickets, and I'm sure you can buy a ticket at the ferry dock. The boat drops you off in a little town. From there, you can get to Dun Aenghus by renting a bike, taking a tour in one of the vans waiting at the boat dock, riding on a cart, etc. We did the van tour and thought it was worth it. We did have limited time at Dun Aenghus, but the van took us all over the island, something the other options could not do. Have a great trip.
Kellis,
I'm not sure reservations to visit the Aran Islands would be required. Just buy a ticket when you arrive in Galway. Have a look at www.visitaranislands.com/acc.html OR www.world66.com/europe/ireland/aranislands for details.
I suppose you could walk to Dun Aenghus after arrival on Inishmore (Kilronan), but it's a bit of a hike from the port area, so a Taxi to the base of the hill would probably be a better idea. Depending on weather, there may also be Pony Carts waiting at the dock, and bicycle rental is also available.
If you have the time and the budget, hire one of the local Guides for a tour around the island (they could drop you at the Fort for a few hours). It's a good way to get a sense of the history of the islands. I found the tour extremely interesting, and the sense of humour of the Guides is priceless!
There's an awesome wee Cafe (in hut with a thatched roof) at the base of Dun Aenghus. If you want a good hearty meal, be sure to stop!
The hike up to the Fort takes about 20-minutes or so. It's not difficult, but is a good exercise! Be very careful around the edge of the Fort that overlooks the ocean. There are NO railings and it's a LONG way down to the rocks!
As I recall, one of the largest Sweater shops in Europe is located in Kilronan (should you be in the market for something like that). There's a really nice Hotel / Restaurant just a few steps from the dock also (uphill to the right as I recall), should you need a Pint after visiting Dun Aenghus.
Happy travels!
Kellis, if you can get your hands on Rick Steves Ireland book, he recommends two companies and gives step by step instructions of the transportation and prices to get there. I'm not saying these are better than what's been recommended above, because we haven't gone yet, but just giving you some more info... I don't have to book handy, but if I remember correctly, this was going out of Galway.
Hi Kellis
Here's a few links for you to look at for ferries from Rossaveel and Doolin. I don't think reservations are mandatory, but if you're sure of exactly when you are going, it probably wouldn't hurt to be sure of your space.

To get to Dun Aengus, you could walk, but it's a long hike. Bike rental would work, and be more fun! Or, I'd suggest getting a local transport to get you there.
Here's another website to check out for Aran Islands info. They have a decent map that would give you some perspective.
