Acknowledging that everyone is different, on average (without luxury) how much should a couple plan on spending per day in Ireland and Scotland?
England a year ago we averaged $225. That was for a month with a car the whole way. Never went into London, paid very few entrance fees. That included half of the round-trip ferry fee for us and the car since we'd been on the continent (that part had been cheaper even including Amsterdam, Bruges, etc).
We'll be in Ireland for most of next month and are hoping for about the same, but might creep up due to entrance fees since we've seen very little there previously.
Unless breakfast is included as non-negotionable in room cost, it comes out of a sack in the back of the car, so do probably two-thirds of the lunches. Supper is pub grub. We care nothing about ambiance in hotels since it's hard to see with your eyes closed.
If you go the B&B route expect to pay about $40-50 per person. Decent, standard hotels (Best Western types) cost a little more $110-130/nite but deals can be had especially in this economy.
Car/transport/fuel expect to run $50 day.
Food and drink- Big variable but about $35 day per person
Incidentals- Admissions, etc $20 day
Altogether you are usually looking at around $125-$150 per person per day to travel in fairly good comfort.
This is very helpful in planning our expenses. Thank you so much!
