How much Heathrow layover time allows for a trip to Windsor?

How long a layover would allow for visit out to Windsor, in your experience? I'm counting on a three hour buffer just for the layover/connection itself. I'm wondering, though, if we had seven hours, would that extra four be enough time to get out and see the castle? Is the means of transport between Heathrow and Windsor easy? Thank you!

With a seven hour layover it is doable. To make the most of your time, take a taxi; its less than 15 minutes away. Going to Windsor the taxi drivers are not required to use the meter, so you will have to negotiate a price.

7 hours is very doable. If you need to re-check in for your 2nd flight (we had to for Air France back to LAX) the earliest you can do that is 3.5 hours before departure. (1:30 for a 5 pm flight)
So you might as well lock up your luggage, and visit Windsor, and get back at least 3 hours before.

It is doable. Michael is right about London
taxis being able to charge what they choose.
You can call a Windsor taxi and get metered
rate. I believe the number is in RS Great
Britain.
